Understanding Card Variants and Finishes

A variant is more than a name

The same Pal can appear in multiple finishes, rarities or languages. A card name is a useful search term, but it is not enough to identify a collection position. Combine set code, card number and variant key when you compare a physical card with a catalog entry.

Finish describes treatment

Regular, holo, special and alternative art treatments can have different collecting goals. Record the finish exactly as published rather than inventing shorthand that will be hard to interpret later. When a finish is unknown, use the catalog detail page or the official source before deciding that a card is a duplicate.

Measure progress in two ways

Base-card progress asks whether a logical card number is represented at least once. Variant progress asks whether each published variant is represented. Keep these views separate in a spreadsheet or in PalTCG. That distinction lets a collector celebrate a completed base set without falsely claiming every treatment is complete.
